Queen Chrysalis has escape and is trying to wreak havoc on Equestria by summoning evil changelings from other dimensions. Queen Chrysalis is successful, but instead of Changlings, she teleported the Transformers from Cybertron to Equestria. Autobots and Decepticons alike have now been transported to Equestria. It’s up to the little ponies and their new autoboot friends to save Equestria from Queen Chrysalis and her new Decepticon friends.
The story of this comic is light and fun. I enjoyed the plot device they used to merge the two franchises into one comic. There is even some commentary about cross over events in the beginning of the book, because apparently ponies visit comic shops in Equestria. The way the transformers and the ponies have to feel each other out before teaming up was done really well. Even thought this is a goofy cross over concept, it does not get lost in ridiculousness. We get some real character development as the Autobots interact with the ponies and the new and strange world around them. Despite the very strange circumstance it all comes down to the basics. The ponies quickly come to understand which transformers are good and which ones are Decepticons. Once that is established, we get a classic good vs evil confrontation.
The art in this comic is of good quality. It has a light and cartoony feel that fits perfect with the subject matter. In general, the art is more like what you will see in a pony comic. Everything is bright and clearly defined, with no shade lines or intricate details. The art is just colorful and clear. The action is easy to understand and you get a clear picture of what is happening without having to give the page a double take. Each panel flows well into the next and organized well on the page.
I enjoyed reading this comic, even though it is not in my normal wheelhouse. It does not take itself too seriously and had a couple of good jokes to enjoy. Overall, I give Transformers My Little Pony: Friendship in Disguise! #1 an 8 out of 10 capes. It was just plain fun and made sense out of something that does not make sense. I am very interested to see how this arc develops.
